Life After Game of Thrones

What are you going to watch now? Needing a new show to feed your geek addiction? Here’s what you can do to fill your time in life after Game of Thrones.

You waited so long for the final season. It was pins and needles while longed to know how the battle was going to go down.

And, then it happened, and your mind was blown. Who knew it was going to end that way?

So, now it’s over. And, there’s this void in your watching schedule. But, never in your heart because once a GOT geek, always a GOT geek. Right?

But, you can always find more shows to geek out on. There’s enough geek love to go around. Plus, you have to watch something.

Why not watch one of these shows?

GOT Successor Shows

I know- “Successor show” just sounds so weird. But, that’s how Martin refers to the shows that are in the works to succeed GOT. He has expressed his disdain for calling them spinoffs or prequels. And, he’s said to be heavily involved with one.

Yet, according to all the buzz. That’s what they will be- prequels. Yep, there will be no continuing story of Jon Snow and the Stark siblings.

Instead, you’ll get a glimpse at the time before. And, I mean like way before.

What do I mean?

Out of the 5 original spinoffs commissioned by HBO, 4 are still in the works with 1 being greenlighted.

And, it takes place thousands of years before the GOT timeline. Like a White Walker origin story, maybe? The beginning of the Wall?

Night King from GOT

Hopefully, we’ll see something of the Children of the Forest and the First Men. No one exactly knows. As with GOT, things are hush-hush.

What we do know is that Martin is heavily involved in this one as executive producer. And, that Naomi Watts has been given a lead role along with Jamie Campbell Bower and Toby Regbo coming in as regulars.

Unfortunately, it’s looking like 2020 being the release date. So, if you’ll have to wait to see what all the buzz is about.

It’s good for filling your TV time in 2020, but what can you watch in the meantime?

New Upcoming Shows

As for new, upcoming TV shows, there’s plenty to choose from. It then comes down to which ones to choose. Life after Game of Thrones doesn’t have to be boring, after all.

New Fantasy Shows

Well, you could watch one of the several new upcoming series that fall into the fantasy genre.

And, boy, do they take on fantasy. Yet, not just epic, high fantasy. Yes, there are some that do.

For example, The Witcher is set to come out some time in 2019 on Netflix. Yeah, this is Netflix’s preemptive strike at the GOT successor show.

Of course, we’re talking about a series based on the novel series by Andrzej Sapkowski. And, yes, it plays off the popularity of the game. You know, The Witcher 3, the 2015 Game of the Year. But, that’s where the similarities between the show and the game end. The show is going to follow closer to the book.

And, it stars Henry Cavill. That’s right. The Man of Steel dons a blonde, almost white wig for this role (Source). Oh, and he put on some serious muscle.

Henry Cavill as The Witcher

If that doesn’t interest you, then maybe The Dark Crystal: Age of Reason will. It’s also coming out on Netflix sometime in 2019. Now, I’ve personally been waiting for this one. Yes, it’s a prequel to the 1982 Jim Henson cult classic. It follows three Gelflings as they insight a rebellion against the Skeksis. Hopefully, the series will create a new generation of geeks that love the wold of Thra.

Finally, you might turn your sights towards HBO’s new show, His Dark Materials. Based on the Phillip Pullman trilogy, the series promises to take a modern slant to this epic classic fantasy. So, does this mean more of an urban fantasy feel? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Furthermore, I hope to see the show following more closely to the books than The Golden Compass did.

Non-Fantasy New Series

If you’re looking for something fresh, you could venture out into something other than fantasy (Yeah, they exist. Weird, but true.).

How about something from the world of DC comics? If that grabs your interest, then you’re in luck because there’s two new shows based on DC characters.

First of all, there’s Pennyworth. Yes, this time the focus is on Albert and not Bruce Wayne. Premiering on Epix on July 28, this prequel to Batman’s timeline isn’t even set in Gotham. No, it takes place in 1960s London. Can you say Albert origin story?

If that’s not mind-blowing enough, The CW is adding Batwoman to the line up on October 6. When Bruce decides to give up on Gotham, his cousin, Kate Kane, steps into to fill his shoes. And, guess who is playing Batwoman? Ruby Rose, of course. Set in the Arrowverse, could The CW be setting us up for some more crossover episodes?

If those two new series aren’t enough to get your geek juices pumping, how about something from the world of Star Wars?

The Mandalorian

Then, you might want to watch The Mandalorian, which airs November 12. Disney+ is stepping into the world of high cost TV programming with this one. Each episode costs $15 million to make. And, it tells the story of a Mandalorian gunfighter on the run from the New Republic five years after the fall of the Empire and before the rise of the First Order.

Catching Up on Current Shows

Even with these new shows, you’re going to have wait for the season premieres.

So, what do you watch in the meantime in this life after Game of Thrones?

Well, if you’re like me, then you have so many shows you want to watch and not enough time to watch them. I mean, I watch the top of my list, but I can’t get to every episode of a series further down my watch list. Honestly, you should see my DVR recordings list.

So, you get behind. But, that’s okay. That’s what the summer is for. What else are you going to watch? Hallmarks June Weddings or Christmas in July (Okay, I’m actually guilty of the last one)?

Seriously, though, the summer is a great time to get caught up.

For example, I love historical drama shows like The Spanish Princess. But, I had higher priorities, so I’m watching it now while I wait for the new season of my favorite shows to roll around.Supernatural Season 14

Here’s some shows that you’ll want to get caught up on (Don’t worry. No spoilers here, even though somebody probably already ruined it for you on Facebook):

  • Supernatural
  • The Magicians
  • The Big Bang Theory- though, honestly, if you missed the series finale, you can’t call yourself much of a Big Bang geek
  • American Gods
  • The Umbrella Academy
  • Supergirl

Really, I could keep on going. But, you get the picture. And, you know which series you need to finish.

So, what’s stopping you?

A true TV geek isn’t going to let something like work or responsibilities slow them down. Just kidding. You need to work, or you won’t have the money to buy the newest season on DVD.

Go Back and Rewatch Old Series

What if you’re caught up on everything?

Then, you’re a super TV geek, and I bow down to your level of commitment.

Seriously, well as serious as I can be (which isn’t very serious), if there’s nothing up next for your favorite series, you can always go back and re-watch it.

Shocking, right?

For me, there’s a few that will always be my favorite go-to shows to watch when there’s nothing good on.

Also, they’re the ones I binge watch when I have nothing better to do. Like when I’m riding in a car. Or, like when I’m stuck in bed sick. I might even re-watch something while I wait for my daughters to get ready to go somewhere.

Okay, I might have a TV addiction.

Even with saying that, there’s always time to squeeze in one more episode.

So, why not go back to ones you love so much in your life after Game of Thrones.

sons of anarchy

For me, these include:

  • Rome
  • True Blood
  • The Tudors
  • NCIS
  • The Vampire Diaries
  • Family Guy
  • Sons of Anarchy
  • One Tree Hill- wait, how did that get on the list? Don’t judge.

No matter what you favorites are, you can always go back and watch them.

Anyways, a true fan will.

Keep The Love Going

Speaking of true fans, is there really such a thing as life after Game of Thrones?

After all, “what is dead may never die.” Game of Thrones may have no new episodes, but the love doesn’t stop.

No, it won’t go away- “but rises again harder and stronger.” Yeah, I did it. I quoted the Greyjoys. Now, that is a true GOT geek.

And, that’s the point. Just because a show ends, that doesn’t mean the fandom has to, also.

In fact, that’s what makes being a geek so great. You can keep loving a show even after the finale.

So, how do you keep your GOT love going?

Um, re-watch it, of course.

Wear your favorite GOT t-shirt to your next family reunion. Mine is “I Drink and I Know Things”. Yeah, my mother wasn’t too thrilled with family photo time. But, I’m a true fan, and I’ll show it whenever and wherever.

If that’s not enough, then you can buy GOT merch. I just bought two new GOT Funko Pops myself.

And, of course, you can always post your favorite means. Truthfully, I have thousands across all my social media.

Here’s a new favorite- Tormund Giantsbane Game of Thrones meme

Basically, you need to keep geeking out on GOT if that’s your thing. Because, if you don’t, you might as well start your walk of atonement toward the Red Keep. “Shame! Shame! Shame!”

For more on how to be a geek- read my post- The How To Be a Geek Guide.

So, life after Game of Thrones is still life because GOT will go on living in our hearts forever.

If you enjoyed this post, please share it socially like a geek would.

Oh, and if you come across any good GOT memes, please share those with me on Facebook at

It will make my day.

Geek on, my friends,

  1. This came at the perfect time! I’ve been looking for a replacement for GOT and you’ve given me some great options. I can’t resist the urge to ask, though, what did you think of how the show ended?

Would you have rewritten it and if so, how would you have changed the story?

    1. Honestly, the ending really aggravated me. I would have kept Dany and Jon together. I really thought that was how it was heading, and I thought that all along. I mean, the book series is A Song of Ice and Fire. And, Jon represented both ice and fire- House Stark and House Targaryen. As for the whole incest thing, it’s actually Targaryen history. Aegon the Conqueror swept into Westeros with 3 dragons and his two sister/wives. I would totally follow that story line. Thanks for the question.

  2. Loving your suggestions. I am a female geek. Yes, we do exist. My husband and I were lost when GOT ended. We watched the Last Kingdom, the new Charmed, we even watched Galavant, as well as most of the shows on your list.

We are at a loss of what to watch now. That is why I am so pumped to hear that they might be making a prequel to the whole GOT series. I will be honest; I was geeking out pretty hard when I read about the other shows coming out. I am a big fan of the Witcher game, so the show is on my list of must-watch.

Thank you again for all the suggestions. I can not wait to see what great adventure Hollywood will take us on next.

    1. Yeah, I’m jonesing for the new season to start. Honestly, though, I’m not a fan of the new Charmed. I’m committed to the original. Yeah, really looking forward to The Witcher. I’m going to get more in-depth about it in my next post, so be looking out for that.

  3. Between 2004 and 2010, I was a huge fan of the TV show ‘Lost,’ which may’ve been the ‘Game of Thrones’ of its time in terms of popularity, with a little bit of fantasy involved, too. Finding successor shows was tough, but at the same time, I was able to discover more genres and plot lines that became enjoyable. Unfortunately for me, none of what I followed ever made it past the first season or two, and these days the only show I watch religiously are the 90-Day Fiance shows and spinoffs on TLC.

    1. Never really watched 90-Day Fiance. Just not my thing. In addition to the shows I mentioned in this post, I watch quite a bit of sports. I’m a fan of Texas teams, of course. I know, isn’t a sports loving geek an oxymoron? Until a couple months ago, I was a high school coach for 7 years. And, since I had practice and games everyday for the majority of the school year, I didn’t have time during the week for socializing. Coming home and watching TV for an hour or two helped me de-stress. And, I naturally fell into being a geek.

  4. Hey Christopher, this was a good read. I only got into Game Of Thrones in the last couple of seasons. My wife has seen them all so she patiently answered all my questions about what was happening. In regards to what to do in life after GOT I did like True Blood and would recommend it to anyone.

Another series I enjoyed was Grimm, I don’t know if you have watched that one.

    Thanks for the suggestions,

    1. I love Grimm. I have every season on DVD. Honestly, I have no idea why I didn’t put it on the list. Though, I did hate the series finale. I felt it was rushed since they cancelled it. It was a little jarring.

    1. Thanks for stopping by. Yeah, Game of Thrones is a good series to watch as a couple. Except, when you argue over who should die next. You really should give one of these shows a try. Especially, if you love GOT and Supernatural.
